Senator says Obama and McCain should focus on future Iraq

Abu Dhabi News.Net
Friday 25th July, 2008

In the US, Republican Senator Chuck Hagel, who travelled with Barack Obama to Iraq, said both presidential candidates should focus on the future of the war in Iraq and stop arguing over whether last year's troop surge was successful.

Hagel’s comments were especially directed at Republican John McCain, who had attacked Obama for opposing the military escalation last year.

Senator Hagel said both men should stop talking about the increased security in Iraq due to the troop surge and start considering the future picture.

While Hagel acknowledged the troop surge had brought about positive changes, he said: "When you flood the zone with superior American military firepower, and you put 30,000 of the world's best troops in a country, there's going to be a result there."

He said: "What are we going to do for the next four years to protect the interest of America and our allies and restructure a new order in the world. That's what America needs to hear from these two candidates."

McCain's Petty Criticisms

I agree with Chuck Hagel. McCain’s persistent focus on Obama reveals a jealous, petty man who probably knows deep down in his gut he doesn’t stand a chance of winning against a candidate as brilliant as Obama. All it reveals is his own insecurity as a candidate. You don’t see Obama constantly focusing in on McCain. He focuses on the future and the importance of working with our allies in a positive effort to improve conditions around the world. Now that’s the candidate I want to see as President.
